The API Platform would be a bold move to productize and externalize APIs.

The Problem

Capital One’s goal was to be taken seriously as a financial technology company and to position itself as a leader in Banking as a Service through Open Banking. My challenge was to lead the design of an external API platform that would launch at SXSW.

The Business Objective

Create value and accelerate innovation by helping developers and partners solve problems using Capital One’s technology in order to generate a new revenue stream.

Getting Grounded

In order to begin understanding the challenge, I first needed to understand the strategy. Long term and short term roadmapping helped me get grounded in the expectations of the task.

Defining the Customer

Research

I began to analyze the data that was provided by consultancies on Developers as a Customer Segment. All of my previous experience at Capital One had focused on Financial Consumers as the customer. This would require a mindset shift and a new perspective. I began research on developers (both internal and external), using qualitative and quantitative methods to fully understand their needs and pain points. One of the most helpful tactics was a develop panel that was comprised of internal and external developers that we would consistently call on for feedback and testing.

Insights

We narrowed down from five to two segments of developers that we would target to provide the best user experience possible for the launch.

  • Self-Improvers make up the majority of developers

  • Revenue Seekers and Business expanders are the highest revenue generators
